Leading port development and marine decommissioning firm Able Group has appointed a new managing director.

Steven Harrison, former chief operating officer at Port Of Tyne, has joined the company behind huge developments on the Humber and Tees.

Founder and executive chairman Peter Stephenson said the appointment comes at “a hugely important and pivotal time” for the business, with both facilities on the Tees and the Humber “playing central roles in delivering the Government’s ambition for the º£½ÇÊÓƵ to become the world leader in developing the offshore wind sector”.

He said it strengthens the senior management team at the Billingham-headquartered business.

“We are delighted that a senior business leader with such a track strong record of delivering success and growth in major companies will now be playing a key role in building on the success that we have achieved for many years across a range of challenging industrial sectors,” Mr Stephenson said.

“Already, we are at the cutting edge of offshore wind developments, with Able Seaton Port providing the installation facilities for five offshore wind farms including Triton Knoll and Dogger Bank.

"Crucially, we are now poised to move ahead with the development of the Able Marine Energy Park on the South Bank of the Humber which has been selected for support under the Government’s Offshore Wind Manufacturing Investment Scheme, a key element in plans, announced by the Prime Minister, as part of the Government’s plan for the º£½ÇÊÓƵ to become the ‘Saudi Arabia of wind’.”

Mr Harrison was previously managing director at Durham-based Banks Mining, and was most recently overseeing Associated British Ports’ business in South Wales and the South West of England.
