Delivery firm Hermes says it will be creating 1,400 new jobs when it opens a new parcel distribution centre in Yorkshire next year.

The Leeds-based firm is working on a new hub in Barnsley, which will provide jobs for managers, engineers, warehouse operatives and administrators. Along with its core staff, there will be around 300 temporary roles during busy periods.

Hermes is one of many logistics and delivery companies that have benefitted from the boom in online shopping that was accelerated by the pandemic.

Its new hub is due to be completed next September.

The company says half of the vehicles operating from the site will be lower emission vehicles, and it will be incorporating other environmental features into the building.

Carl Lyon, chief operating officer at Hermes º£½ÇÊÓƵ, said: “We’re working closely with Hermes in order to maximise job and training opportunities for local people on this prime site next year.

“We’re taking full advantage of the sites potential in terms of partnership working to better the community, working with schools and local sports clubs, as well as for the environment with Hermes putting sustainability at the forefront of their operations.
