P&O chief executive David Stretch has pledged freight services between Hull and Zeebrugge won’t be affected by a review that could see passengers removed from the route.

It comes as the ferry operator was included in the latest post-transition period Brexit contract to ensure capacity.

Mr Stretch said: “We will continue to operate freight services on the route as part of a comprehensive range of services going into Hull and around the º£½ÇÊÓƵ.

“As such, the supply of food, medical supplies and goods will not be slowed nor damaged should passenger services cease to operate.

“Due to the extended impact of Covid19, P&O Ferries is having to consult on further difficult action in which some jobs could be made redundant - but as a result, thousands more jobs can be saved.

“These necessary steps will ensure we are a more agile business that is better able to give customers the service they want and the value they demand.”

And he has refuted claims the company’s owner - DP World - had given up on the route, with Mick Cash, general secretary of the RMT union, accusing them of throwing the towel in last week.

Mr Stretch said the union had failed to acknowledge the freight position, though P&O has only spoken out about the situation now.
