Drax and DB Cargo º£½ÇÊÓÆµ sign five year rail contract extension

60 trains a week operate between the ports of Immingham and Hull and Drax Power Station

Drax has signed a five year 'hook and haul' contract extension with rail freight operator DB Cargo º£½ÇÊÓÆµ for biomass supply from Humber ports.

The leading operator runs around 60 trains a week from Immingham and Hull to the Selby power station.

Roger Neary, head of sales at DB Cargo º£½ÇÊÓÆµ, said: “We are delighted that Drax has chosen to extend our existing contract with them for another five years. We are proud of the important role our people continue to play in delivering an efficient and sustainable source of renewable energy for use here in the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ.”

Each train carries 1,650 tonnes of feed stock, which in turn goes on to power millions of º£½ÇÊÓÆµ homes and businesses. 

Mike Maudsley, º£½ÇÊÓÆµ portfolio generation director at Drax, said: “These rail deliveries are a critical part of our global supply chain for sustainable biomass that supports thousands of jobs and has delivered economic growth across the north of England, while supplying renewable electricity to millions of homes and businesses.

It comes after investment in rail at the start of the supply chain, in the USA, was recently celebrated.

The first year of operation of the $15 million (£12m) five mile link saw more than 250 road journeys wiped out per rail load between the LaSalle pellet plant in northern Louisiana and the dedicated export facility at Port of Greater Baton Rouge.
