A French shipping company has launched a new container route to and from Europe from Bristol Port in a bid to help ships avoid “congested South East ports”.

The new feeder service from Dunkirk, in France, to Royal Portbury Dock is part of container transportation business CMA-CGM's offering and will operated by Containerships, which already runs a long-established service to Bilbao in Spain.

The new route will also enable deep sea feeder connectivity to the Far East, according to Bristol Port.

James Stangroom, commercial manager, said: “We are delighted to welcome an additional service, and pleased in CMA-CGM’s faith in the port by bringing this new service to Portbury.

"We look forward to working with them to increase box numbers.”

In March, Bristol Port missed out on a bid to become one of the º£½ÇÊÓƵ's new freeports. It had been slated to created around 50,000 jobs had it been successful.

Business leaders in the West of England spoke of their “bitter disappointment” after the bid for a freeport in Bristol and another in Dorset missed out on being selected.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced eight new freeports for England in his Budget statement in March including one in Plymouth.
