Whether we are in business, working from home, shopping or watching TV, millions of us are increasingly reliant on fast and reliable broadband. In fact, it is such a crucial part of the nation鈥檚 infrastructure that in 2019 the 海角视频 Government began to make commitments to improve the country鈥檚 networks - something that will see gigabit capable broadband made available to at least 85% of the 海角视频 by 2025.
One of the companies ensuring the Government鈥檚 target is achieved is . It is pumping in 拢15bn to upgrade the 海角视频鈥檚 digital infrastructure - and more than 730,000 homes and businesses across the South West can already order an ultrafast, ultra-reliable full-fibre service on the Openreach network through a provider of their choice.
It builds and maintains an open network that鈥檚 used by more than 690 communication providers (CPs), so they can offer broadband, phone and TV packages to homes and businesses all over the 海角视频.
And much of what Openreach has achieved so far is mind boggling. The Openreach network is made up of more than 192 million kilometres of fibre optic cables and copper wires. The network cables and wires, if laid out flat, would go round the world 4,798 times.
How to upgrade NOW

鈥淲e鈥檙e committed to building the best digital future for the 海角视频,鈥 said 翱辫别苍谤别补肠丑鈥檚 partnership director for the South West, Connie Dixon. 鈥淥ur once-in-a-generation investment to move the 海角视频 from legacy copper networks to a full-fibre future will reach 25 million homes and businesses by the end of 2026. This massive change will future-proof the country鈥檚 digital infrastructure for generations. We鈥檝e spent more than 拢17bn in the last 10 years to build and maintain our networks, and that鈥檚 helped bring superfast broadband (with download speeds of 30Mbps or more) to more than 97% of the 海角视频.
鈥淲e now live in one of the world鈥檚 leading digital economies and networks are the backbone for a vibrant digital sector. Connectivity has been vital during the Coronavirus pandemic, helping businesses to keep going and letting people communicate and support each other during lockdowns. As we deal with the aftermath and adapt to a new way of living and working, we believe our network will become more crucial than ever.
"We鈥檒l continue to invest to make sure that the 海角视频鈥檚 digital future is ultrafast, extraordinarily reliable, and available to as many people as possible.
鈥淏ut to maintain and grow a network of this scale requires an exceptional team, and our 25,000 field engineers work around the clock in all kinds of weather and in every community. Last year they completed 9.8 million engineering jobs, installing and maintaining the equipment that provides fast, reliable broadband to millions of people. Our work often involves liaising closely with local councils, highways agencies, energy suppliers and landowners, to solve complex engineering and logistical problems.鈥
Here, we find out more about full-fibre broadband, its benefits and what it all means for you:

What i s full-fi b re?
Full-fibre also known as Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP), is a direct fibre optic connection between an exchange and a home or business, which typically doesn鈥檛 get routed through a street cabinet.
Copper cables were originally designed to transmit sound, whereas full-fibre uses cables to deliver data. The cables are made of tiny individual fibres, each a tenth the breadth of a human hair, and instead of using electrical signals, like traditional broadband, Full-fibre transmits data using high-speed pulses of light.
What are the benefits of a full-fibre network?
This once-in-a-lifetime upgrade has many benefits, including:
- Speed: Full-fibre can transmit data up to 10 times faster than the 海角视频鈥檚 current average download speed. That means download speeds of up to 1Gbps.
- Reliability and security: Full-fibre roadband is up to five times more reliable than broadband which uses the copper network. Fibre cables are incredibly durable, so they鈥檙e much more resistant to things like inclement weather, water damage, and fluctuations in temperature. They鈥檙e also impervious to electromagnetic interference, which means the data they carry can鈥檛 be interfered with or intercepted in transmission.
- Future-proof The full-fibre network is a once-in-a- lifetime upgrade, as the cables have the capacity to transmit data at even greater speeds than we do today. As technology advances, the full-fibre network will meet the need for greater speeds and bandwidth, but without the need for further engineering work in the street.

Community and environment
The last few years have seen a seismic shift in how people work. A report by the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr) found that between 2019 and 2021, the number of people working from home increased by nearly two million and more than 320,000 workers left major cities. Openreach is building its full-fibre broadband network nationwide, from the smallest hamlets to the biggest cities, so it will be effectively wherever they are.
A study by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) found that 67% of companies used the quality of digital infrastructure as an important metric when deciding where to invest. A nationwide full-fibre broadband network will give rural communities the chance to attract investment and job opportunities, and provide easier access to e essential services like healthcare and education.
The Cebr report estimated that nationwide full-fibre broadband could not only provide a boost to the 海角视频 economy of 拢59bn by 2025, but also decrease commuter trips by 300 million, reducing CO2 emissions by a massive 360,000 tonnes a year.
Investing in people, diversity and inclusion
Openreach employs 37,000 people across the 海角视频 and is the largest apprenticeship provider in the private sector. This year, the company announced it would be creating another 4,000 jobs building and maintaining its networks. The company is also aiming to retrain an extra 3,000 existing engineers to support customers on its new platform.
Openreach has been making progress on being more inclusive and diverse. About 16% of trainee recruits were women last year 鈥 up from 12% the previous year. And It is going further. with an ambitious new set of goals, including targets on ethnic minority representation, in its diversity and inclusion commitments.
