Barons Pastures - Phases 1-3, Kirby Muxloe, submitted by MDA Consulting and Wheatcroft Homes
The Barons Pastures development regenerated a brownfield site by creating two distinct collections of properties, providing 17 individually designed homes in the village of Kirby Muxloe.
For the design of the development, inspiration was taken from the existing properties on the site - a Victorian farmhouse, farm cottages and agricultural buildings.
The project included renovating the farm buildings which include the double-fronted Victorian farmhouse and converted barns and stables. Another ten brand new buildings were created.
The Vera Mitchell Building, Leicester, submitted by Mitchian Group
The Vera Mitchell Building is a newly built residential scheme of 122 one-bedroom apartments plus a ground floor retail unit behind Leicester Royal Infirmary and next to De Montfort University.
All apartments open into a combined lounge-kitchen area and have bedrooms designed for a large double bed. Some of the apartments also benefit from having their own private balconies.
Window sizes are larger than traditional residential housing to allow increased daylight levels and maximize passive solar gains.
Façades exposed to high levels of sunshine were provided with solar glass to prevent over-heating. North facing facades have increased levels of insulation.
Wolsey Road, Coalville, submitted by GEDA and rg+p
Wolsey Road is a regeneration project that transformed a former commercial site in Coalville into a vibrant new neighbourhood. It includes 77 affordable homes, with 57 for affordable rent and 20 for shared ownership.
The design celebrates Coalville's industrial heritage through a contemporary architectural language combining red brick tones, refined detailing and complementary grey render and tiles.
A strong primary avenue forms the spine of the layout while a series of landscaped courtyards branch northwards to frame views of the Old Bakery heritage asset.
