The last 18 months have had a profound effect on businesses throughout the country, including those in the Kirklees Borough of West Yorkshire.
But despite the many negative impacts of the pandemic, businesses and their owners have shown incredible resilience, with a large number of people taking the bold step of starting their own venture.
1,600 start-ups have formed in Kirklees this year so far, with a further 2,000 set-up last year.
Recognising the ingenuity and hard work that goes into starting a new business, Kirklees Council is showcasing the very best in the area by sponsoring the New Business of the Year Award at the upcoming in Huddersfield.
The presentation of the award is particularly poignant for the council as it works towards improving support for start-ups and helping more people achieve their dreams.
Kirklees Council as category sponsors
Celebrating all new businesses across the region, Kirklees Council is sponsoring the New Business of the Year Award at the
Shabir Pandor, council leader and cabinet member for business, said: “This year we have chosen to sponsor the New Business of the Year Award to celebrate astounding businesses which, despite a difficult and uncertain few years, have managed to take off and flourish. Now more than ever this is an incredible achievement.
“We know there are a lot of factors in a start-up’s success. Starting a business takes talent and tenacity, drive and commitment – but there are other factors too, like sharing your start-up journey, creating a network and seeking solid support."
Taking place on Friday, 21 January at the John Smith's Stadium. The night will mark local success, bringing companies from across the region together.
Understanding the challenges of the industry, Kirklees offers a wide range of support for new businesses and entrepreneurs, as well as acting as a gateway to support from the public sector.
Access includes services offered through the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership, universities, private and third sector organisations.

Councillor Pandor highlighted the support offered through its services, he said: “As a council, we’re proud to provide a range of expert services and invaluable connections to support Kirklees’ up-and-coming entrepreneurs.
"We want to help build successful businesses which not only survive but thrive for years to come. Our aim is for this support will further strengthen the local economy, by helping more dedicated entrepreneurs make their dreams a reality."
The council's expert business advisers help entrepreneurs navigate the varied- and often complex- wealth of support available, working with each business on an individual basis.
