The new general manager of Birmingham's popular eatery and champagne bar Marco Pierre White’s offers his first impressions of the city

Blues or Villa?

That was one of the first questions I was asked upon introducing myself as the new general manager of Hotel Indigo and Marco Pierre White’s Steakhouse Bar & Grill.

Not a question I was expecting to be asked, so I waved it off with a rather ambiguous, “Still making my decision at the moment”. I didn’t have the heart to tell them I support Crystal Palace FC, the new boys in the Premier league.

Being the new guy in town can be a big task for anybody nowadays – so many connections to be made; who runs what, where to eat, where not to eat, who you need to speak to get on ‘the list’, sometimes it feels like you’re back at school.

The good thing about Birmingham is that there is so much on offer, and luckily for me, people are willing to point you in the right direction.

Within my first few weeks I’ve met a range of incredibly interesting people who I will no doubt work closely with over the coming months to not only benefit the business I work for but also connect other companies who may in turn benefit each other.

It’s a bit like a giant game of Connect the Dots which once done, creates a much bigger picture. That’s why Birmingham is so different as a city, the people here are open minded and prepared to put themselves out there.

Birmingham has an incredibly bright future ahead of itself. From the opening of the architectural masterpiece which is the Library of Birmingham to the controversial HS2 which is set to substantially increase inward investment within the city, why would you want to work anywhere else?
