Wren Kitchens became a £600 million turnover company in 2019, in the 10th full year of trading.

Growth of 25 per cent year-on-year saw it soar from £490 million to £612 million, accounts just published revealed.

It was the biggest push on since 2016, with independent recognition as the fastest growing business in the sector received.

Nearly 600 more staff were also taken on, taking the headcount to 4,716, making Wren the biggest private employer in the Humber region as it overtook British Steel.

Owned by East Yorkshire entrepreneur Malcolm Healey, who previously headed up Hygena, Barton-headquartered Wren closed the year with 89 showrooms, and - despite Covid-19 - remains on track to hit 100 in 2020. The 93rd has just opened in Worcester, at Elgar Retail Park.

Orders were continuing to outpace deliveries as the year closed, though the impact of the pandemic and subsequent economic downturn has yet to be seen.

The monumental challenge underway will be to maintain - if possible - a decade of phenomenal growth, with the documents filed in late February ahead of the coronavirus hard stop.

In his strategic report, Mark Pullan, managing director, said: “there is significant further opportunity for growth in the kitchen market both in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ and beyond, however without the infrastructure in place then it will not be able to exploit such opportunities nor to achieve its strategic goals,”.
