The Business Secretary has said the Government will continue meetings with Vauxhall and Stellantis chiefs "over the coming days and weeks" in a desperate bid to safeguard jobs at the firm's Ellesmere Port plant.

It comes after owners Stellantis said they may close the site if a deal with the º£½ÇÊÓƵ Government is not reached, putting 1,000 jobs at risk.

Talks began last week over whether to close or invest in the plant, but the decision was delayed.

On Monday, an urgent question raised by Greg Clark MP, asked Kwasi Kwarteng MP, the Secretary of State for Business, about the future of car manufacturing, and an update on the Ellesmere Port situation.

Mr Kwarteng responded: "The Government is absolutely committed to ensuring the future of manufacturing at Ellesmere Port to secure jobs and livelihoods of workers at plant.

"I held a constructive meeting last week with Len McCluskey, General Secretary of Unite the union.

"Over the coming days and weeks, I myself, ministers and officials will continue extensive dialogue with company.
