Vauxhall Ellesmere Port future: Discussions continue over whether to close or invest in huge plant

After months of discussions and uncertainty for employees, parent company Stellantis described reports a decision is due this week as 'speculation'

Discussions are ongoing on the future of Vauxhall's Ellesmere Port plant

The parent company of Vauxhall has said discussions over whether to close the Ellesmere Port site are ongoing - describing reports a decision could be due this week as "speculation".

Extensive discussions over the future of the plant, which employs around 1,000 people and is owned by parent company Stellantis, have been ongoing since February.

The firm is reportedly reviewing its options for the Cheshire site - to invest in a new version of the Astra, build a different model at the site, or shut it down altogether.

The Government said last month it was "absolutely committed" to protecting the future of the plant.

On Monday evening, the Telegraph that a decision could be decided this week, with Stellantis chiefs meeting for a "crucial board session".

When contacted for a comment by BusinessLive, a Stellantis spokesman described those reports as "speculation", adding that "discussions are still ongoing".

The news comes after Vauxhall's French parent company PSA in January merged with Fiat Chrysler to form a new automotive superpower called Stellantis.
