Ulster Carpets, one of Northern Ireland’s most iconic manufacturers has bought a Hampshire sustainable flooring company for an undisclosed sum.

The purchase of Alternative Flooring is the latest in a recent acquisitive streak for the family owned Portadown business which has been in operation for 85 years.

Ulster Carpets said addition of the Hampshire business sits well with its range of “complimentary” flooring companies which sit under its umbrella. It specialises in ethically-sourced carpets, rugs and other flooring which can be tailored to bespoke requirements and the brand will remain independent under the Ulster Carpets Group.

Ulster Carpets supplies high quality flooring products globally and counts some of the world’s most famous hotels and corporates as clients, and was granted a royal warrant last year.

David Acheson, Ulster Carpet’s Strategic Development Director said the latest purchase aligns to its growth plans.

“We believe that the Ulster Carpets Group is a fitting home for Alternative Flooring in terms of culture, outlook and ambition,” he said. “Alternative will remain an independent, autonomous brand within the Ulster Carpets Group, but with the added expertise and resources to strengthen its capability, service, and product range.

“It is good news for Alternative’s valued customers, key suppliers, and exceptional employees.”

Chris Brammall will retire as chairman of Alternative Flooring but will retire following the acquisition.
