Typhoo Tea to cut almost a quarter of its workforce in major restructure

The tea giant said it's in a move to 'safeguard' the firm's future

Typhoo has announced a company restructure

Typhoo Tea has said it is being forced to cut almost a quarter of its Merseyside workforce as part of a major restructure.

The brand has said 76 roles - 55 full-time and 21 temporary - are to be cut from its 295-strong workforce from its Wirral factory, in a bid to "safeguard" its future.

The decision will be subject to the outcome of a consultation process, which will last for a month.

The announcement about the site on Tuesday follows what the firm described as a "detailed review" of all aspects of the business, against what it called an "increasingly challenging trading environment".

Chief executive, Des Kingsley, said the organisational restructure was an "integral part" of a broader plan to secure the firm's future.

Departments most likely to be affected by the announcement include production, engineering and office-based functions, he said.

He added: “This decision has not been taken lightly. We recognise the impact of today’s announcement, but we have to take action if we are to remain competitive and build a strong and successful future for the business, in which there will be a renewed focus on efficiency, cost management, quality and service levels.

“We will offer every possible assistance to all those people whose roles will be affected and will work closely with relevant support agencies in the area to try and find alternative employment opportunities.”
