Toyota says it will "adjust production" at its Deeside engine plant due to a global microchip shortage..

The car giant is to slash worldwide vehicle production by 40% in September because of the issue.

The world's biggest carmaker had planned to make almost 900,000 cars next month, but has now reduced that to 540,000 vehicles.

In the º£½ÇÊÓƵ, Toyota has a car plant at Burnaston, in Derbyshire, and an engine plant on Deeside. In a statement, it said: "Toyota is going to great lengths to minimize the impact of the semi-conductor supply shortage that is globally impacting the automotive industry.

"And as such, TMº£½ÇÊÓƵ Deeside production will be adjusted according to demand."

The Deeside engine plant employs over 600 people. In 2020, a total of 245,118 fully assembled engines were produced for the Burnaston Corolla & Corolla Hybrid vehicles and exported to other Toyota plants building the C-HR, Corolla and Prius Plus.

The aim for Toyota as a whole is to make up for any lost volume by the end of 2021.
