Smales fish named º£½ÇÊÓÆµ's best as Hull firm reels in national acclaim

The historic Hull firm supplies around a quarter of the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ's fish and chip shops nationally

Fish supplied by Hull seafood giant Smales has been named the best in the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ at a prestigious national awards.

Smales, which has its operations based off Hessle Road in Hull, supplies cod and haddock fillets to Nottingham fish and chip business The Cod’s Scallops.

The Cod’s Scallops recently triumphed at the annual Fish & Chip Awards, where it scooped the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ’s number one shop award.

It means fish judged to be the best in the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ has been processed and supplied by one of Hull’s best-known and most historic companies.

Organisers of the Fish and Chip Awards said: “Each year the National Fish & Chip Awards recognise talent and celebrate excellence, quality and choice offered by businesses across the fish and chip industry in a variety of award categories.

“Nominees are appraised in each of the key areas that highlight best practice against a range of criteria - with mystery dining judges attending the shops to assess a number of factors including responsible sourcing practices, customer service, staff training policies and the overall quality of the fish and chips on offer.”

Smales was also the supplier for the runner-up in the 2020 National Fish & Chip Awards, Shap Chippy in Cumbria.

Based in Hull for more than 80 years, Smales currently supplies approximately a quarter of the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ's fish and chip shops nationally.
