A new shellfish processing department has been established by a Grimsby fish processing company as it celebrates 50 years in the industry.

Hobsons launched in December 1971, and was bought out from founder Bill Hobson - a former chair of the Grimsby Fish Merchants’ Association - by Withernsea-based GWS Seafoods with partner Croft Holdings in 2020.

The new team brought the crustacean knowledge to the traditional white fish business on the North Quay.

Director Samantha Stork said: “We have had a transformative year despite the pandemic with continual growth and development.

“This has allowed Hobsons to grow and open new markets with the new shellfish processing department now on-site alongside the original processing facilities.”

Reflecting on the highs of the Seventies when the docks were bustling with activity to the lows as Grimsby saw a decline in its once thriving fishing industry, she told how Hobsons has “held its position strong” with the takeover bringing 20 years of shellfish processing knowledge and “vast exportation sales expertise”.
