A Birmingham company which finds sustainable uses for the mountains of ash left over at the º£½ÇÊÓƵ's coal-burning power stations has been sold.

Sutton Coldfield-based Power Minerals, which was founded by Nigel Waldron and partner Peter Brennan in 2003, has been acquired by Prague-based energy firm EP Power Europe for an undisclosed fee from German parent company Steag which acquired it in 2010.

Power Minerals operates three º£½ÇÊÓƵ sites and directs millions of tonnes of power station ash by-product for re-use in manufacturing, construction and other infrastructure and civil engineering projects.

The fly ash created by coal-fired energy generation serves as an ecological and cost-effective substitute for clinker in cement production and as an additive replacing cement in concrete.

It is said to significantly reduce the CO2 footprint of cement as well as bring down costs and improve quality.

Mr Waldron said: "This deal is a huge vote of confidence in Power Minerals, the broader sector and in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ.

"It will open up new opportunities for us and take the business in exciting new directions as well as ensuring our employees have a bright future.
