More than 100 new staff are being sought in Scunthorpe to support supermarkets’ increased demand for food.

One of the º£½ÇÊÓƵ’s leading pork processors, Karro Food Ltd, is looking to full permanent and temporary positions as orders soar.

The company’s Foxhills Industrial Estate site is looking for people to join them in a whole range of factory-based roles, with 360 permanent employees already on the payroll.

Steve Ellis, chief executive at Karro - part of the North Yorkshire-headquartered £1.2 billion turnover Eight Fifty Food Group that includes Grimsby-headquartered Young’s Seafood - said: “Following the government’s advice to avoid unnecessary social contact due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the demand for in home food has risen sharply.

"We are proud to do our bit to keep food on the nation’s table and are looking for more people to come and help support our efforts.”

He said there is an immediate need to recruit people into the business at Scunthorpe.

Applicants from the hospitality sector could be particularly suitable due to familiarity with food hygiene and safety regulations. However, Karro will also provide training to those who have no experience.

Mr Ellis said: “These are uncertain times for many people, especially in the hospitality industry, as pubs, restaurants and hotels close.
