Turkish industrial group Ciner has abandoned plans for a new glass bottling plant in that promised to created 600 new jobs.

The family-owned group, which is one of the biggest firms in Turkey, said the business case for the £390m project, first announced back in 2020, was no longer viable following changes to demand in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ marketplace.

However, it confirmed it is in discussions with the over acquiring the site at the Rassau Industrial Estate.

Ciner said at this stage it couldn't reveal what potential alternative investment could be considered for the site. However, the wide-ranging group is particularly interest in solar panels, lithium batteries and other innovations within the renewables sector aligned to its glass and soda ash businesses.

Ciner said it has not received any financial support from the Welsh Government or Blaenau Gwent Council to date.

Didem Ciner, chair of the board of Ciner Glass, said: "We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to the º£½ÇÊÓƵ and Welsh governments, as well as members of County Council, for the support and engagement shown throughout the development of this project.

“We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to the people of Blaenau Gwent, who have warmly welcomed the Ciner family and company over the past three years. Their warmth and openness have left a lasting impression, and we remain deeply appreciative of the community’s support and committed to supporting local projects where possible.

“We value the srong working relationships we have built and look forward to continuing these lines of engagement as we share new plans for our investment in Wales in due course."
