Two North East companies have benefited from major contracts from the growing offshore wind market.

Northumberland engineering firm Osbit has been awarded a contract to design and build an offshore wind turbine pile gripper system by leading Malaysian energy firm Sapura Energy.

Engie Fabricom, meanwhile, which has offices in Middlesbrough and Stokesley, says it has taken a “firm foothold” in the sector with a number of contract wins.

Latest figures from Renewableº£½ÇÊÓƵ suggest that the global market for offshore wind has grown by 16% in the last 12 months, with the º£½ÇÊÓƵ the largest single market.

Offshore wind currently provides around 7% of British power, but that could increase to more than 30% by the end of the next decade, providing 27,000 jobs in the sector.

And there are hopes that the North East’s offshore sector could be a major player in sector after the Government named the region as one of four parts of the country that will become part of a new Offshore Wind Growth Partnership.

Osbit’s contract with Sapura is for the the first large offshore wind farm to be constructed in the rapidly developing Taiwanese market.

Managing director Brendon Hayward said: “We are delighted to add Sapura Energy to our client-base and to expand Osbit’s footprint in the emergent East Asian offshore wind market.
