Midland manufacturers are stepping up their export drives – with Brazil topping the list of new overseas targets.

Firms in the region are drawing up new export strategies to muscle in on emerging markets, according to a new EEF/Barclays Report.

And Brazil has emerged as the top priority market, with one third of companies surveyed planning to increase exports to the South American state.

The report shows that many firms are implementing ‘sophisticated strategies’ to boost exports despite criticism of the º£½ÇÊÓƵ’s overseas sales record by some commentators.

Richard Halstead, Midlands Region Director at EEF said: “There are no hard and fast rules about the best way to enter new markets. But what is clear is that it demands considerable time and commitment.

“However, those companies who generate results are ultimately rewarded with better performance and a diverse and resilient customer base.

"If we are to double our exports by 2020 then we simply have to get more and more companies exporting, helped by a government-led crusade highlighting the benefits of º£½ÇÊÓƵTI.”

Mike Rigby, Head of Manufacturing at Barclays, said: “It is encouraging to see an increasing appetite amongst manufacturers to invest, export and grow their international footprint.
