Ledwood Engineering wins contract with petrochemical giant Sabic 海角视频

The Pembroke Dock-based firm is working on the multi-million pound redevelopment of Sabic's Teesside Olefins plant

Pembroke Dock-based Ledwood Engineering has been appointed to work on the multi-million pound redevelopment of global petrochemical giant Sabic’s 海角视频 operations in the north east of England. The engineering, fabrication and construction company has been awarded a 12-month contract at the Olefins 6 site in Wilton, Teesside. The value of the contract was not disclosed.

The contract will see a team of Ledwood’s 150 engineers working with Sabic to disinvest 4,000 metres of existing pipework and 26 pieces of equipment. The Welsh firm will then fabricate, install and test 5,500 metres of pipework and erect 41 pieces of equipment and 155 tonnes of steelwork at the plant.

The works are part of Sabic’s Teesside improvement project, which aims to redesign Olefins 6, also known as the ‘cracker’, a chemical plant which cracks apart raw materials to produce ethylene, propylene and butadiene. The Ledwood contract will help the operations complete its first phase of the project which will reduce the site’s carbon footprint by up to 60%.

This is the second major contract Ledwood has won across the border in recent months. At the end of 2022, the construction firm won a major £50m contract with GE Steam Power at the Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant, safeguarding 150 jobs.

The 42-month contract for the power plant in Somerset will see Ledwood install equipment as part of GE’s work supplying two conventional power islands for Hinkley Point C, which include the Arabelle steam turbine.

Nick Revell, Ledwood managing director, said: “This contract is a major vote of confidence in our capability, particularly as it comes hot on the heels of the announcement by GE that we have been appointed to work on Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant. Together, these two contracts will help to safeguard and create some 300 jobs.

“With expertise in the global chemical and processing industries, our work for Sabic in Teesside is being delivered by a local team led by Project Manager Steven Stokes. We’re really proud to be playing a part in enabling Sabic to make the transition to decarbonise its chemical cracker and the company’s global operations.”
