JLR staff in Birmingham balloted over four-day week plan

Workers at a Jaguar Land Rover plant in Birmingham are to vote on new proposals to move to a four-day week.

Around 2,500 staff at its factory in Castle Bromwich will stage the ballot on the new plans which are known as The Merlin Gateway Agreement.

The Jaguar XJ model has been produced in Castle Bromwich for ten years but its manufacture is due to end on July 5.

Long-serving JLR staff were offered voluntary redundancy but that window for applications has now closed.

Last week, JLR announced it was launching a new partnership with German giant BMW to produce the next generation of electric vehicles.

In the briefing sent out to staff, JLR said: "To compete in the future, we must offer battery electric and hybrid vehicles and we have the opportunity to lead in this new technology in the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ.

"The end of production of current XJ marks an important turning point for Castle Bromwich as we close another chapter in our story so we can look towards the next."
