Hull staff 'kept in dark' at Kingstown Furniture awarded £160,000 after job losses

Almost 50 former employees at Hull firm Kingstown Furniture have been awarded £160,000 after claiming they were “kept in the dark” over job losses.

A total of 47 people who previously worked at the manufacturer, based in Leads Road, argued Kingstown Furniture failed to consult properly with them over redundancies which were announced in March.

They have now been awarded around £160,000 – equalling £3,600 per employee – after an employment tribunal ruled Kingstown Furniture failed to comply with consultation obligations.

Kingstown Furniture was a long-standing family business, with more than 40 years of experience.

The business was a large manufacturer of assembled domestic furniture, with annual sales in the region of £20m.

It employed almost 300 staff, who on March 13 were told just hours after arriving at work that the company was .

Speaking at the time, Phil Deyes, of Leonard Curtis Business Rescue & Recovery, said: “The market conditions faced by the company has been extremely challenging. 

“It has seen turnover fall dramatically, impacted mainly by a sharp decline in discretionary spending by º£½ÇÊÓÆµ consumers.
