Carmaker Honda is pausing production at its Swindon plant because of a shortage of stock caused by delays in getting parts into the º£½ÇÊÓƵ.

The Japanese car giant said the decision on Wednesday (December 9) was "due to transport-related parts delays" as ports are hit by demand and coronavirus restrictions.

The plant operates on a "just in time" production system, where parts arrive as and when they are needed. Honda told employees that it is currently experiencing delays and congestion at º£½ÇÊÓƵ ports.

"The situation is currently being monitored with a view to restart production as soon as possible," Honda told the .

It added: "Honda of the º£½ÇÊÓƵ Manufacturing has confirmed to employees that production will not run on Wednesday 9 December due to transport-related parts delays."

The company said it was looking at alternative arrangements, such as air freight.

The carmaker joins a growing number of businesses experiencing disruption at ports in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ amid no-deal Brexit warnings.

In recent weeks congestion has been building up at a number of British ports, including in Felixstowe, Southampton and London Gateway.

Honda’s Swindon factory built just under 110,000 cars last year but is due to close permanently in 2021.
