Half-year sales down 8% at Portmeirion as a result of Covid-19

Sales over the last six months are down by eight per cent at pottery firm Portmeirion.

In a half-year trading update, the Stoke-based company revealed that sales for the six months to June 30 stand at £32 million - compared to £34.9 million in 2019.

The company - which owns brands including Spode, Royal Worcester, Pimpernel, Wax Lyrical and Nambé - has attributed the decrease to the Covid-19 pandemic.

It said the closure of retail stores around the world since March 'significantly impacted' sales during the crisis, but that the impact had been partially negated by significant growth - of more than 90 per cent - in online sales and by converting some of its production capabilities at Cumbria-based Wax Lyrical factory into making hand sanitiser.

The firm added that the company is now seeing an improving positive trend as key markets begin to reopen and that it is seeing good order intent from customers, assuming no further disruption from coronavirus.

Portmeirion chief executive Mike Raybould said: "Given the backdrop of total retail lockdowns around the world for over three months, we are very pleased with our sales performance in the first half and are encouraged by the improving trend we saw in June.

"Although there remains considerable economic uncertainty in our key markets, we are cautiously optimistic for the second half of 2020.

"Our brands have over 700 years of combined history and I would like to thank our employees around the world for their great resilience and agility in coping with the challenges the virus has thrown at us.
