Airflo Fishing Products is owned by US firm Mayfly Group

A Powys-based manufacturer of the world’s only PVC-free speciality fly-fishing lines has received half a million pound from the Welsh Government securing 44 jobs and creating a further 21. Airflo Fishing Products has received a loan of £566,000 via the Economy Futures Fund which will help it grow and safeguard its factory on the Ffrwdgrech Industrial Estate in Brecon, as well as increase its level of exports.

The firm, which is owned by US firm Mayfly Group, is on track to quadruple its exports to North America and is looking to grow in new markets such as Japan, New Zealand and South Africa. Airflo also plans to introduce new products to market as a result of the funding.

The new products will replace ageing equipment and continue research and development at Brecon. It follows significant investment of nearly £2m by the business in its plant in Brecon since 2020. Most fly-fishing lines are made from PVC which break down immediately after manufacturing and are not easily recycled.

The Welsh Government said Airflo’s products therefore align with its sustainability goals and its flagship economic contract prioritises the social and environmental needs of Wales. An economic contract is already in place between Airflo and the Welsh Government, and the latest investment will lead to a new, enhanced contract within 12 months of receipt of the award.

Economy Minister Vaughan Gething said: “I’m delighted to announce this major investment to support specialist manufacturing in Powys. Airflo is a unique company with an innovative product with worldwide sales potential.

“So, this project will not only help boost the local economy in Brecon, providing a predominantly rural area with quality employment opportunities with very competitive salaries, but it will also result in the development of a new product that will help protect the environment.

“The Welsh Government is committed to protecting our environment and this investment aligns with our long-term ambitions of phasing out unnecessary, single-use products, especially plastic, and sending zero plastic to landfill.”
