Green aviation fuel refinery developer Velocys has been asked to join the Government鈥檚 Jet Zero Council.
The inaugural meeting of the new body was held today, Wednesday July 22, after the government included sustainable aviation targets in a wide-reaching green recovery from Covid-19.
Transport Minister Grant Shapps and Business and Energy Secretary Alok Sharma are co-chairing it, with strong support for clean fuel voiced by the former ahead of the gathering.
The 拢350 million waste-to-fuel plant was also referenced by Mr Shapps when the formation was first announced, having gained planning consent in May for a site on the South Humber Bank at Stallingborough.
The Altalto Immingham site, as it is to be known, is backed in a joint venture with national flag carrier British Airways and Shell.聽

Henrik Wareborn, chief executive of Velocys, said: 鈥淰elocys is very pleased to have been asked by the 海角视频 Government to join the Jet Zero Council.
鈥淭he first meeting of the Council could not have come at a more important time. As we return to the skies attention must focus on solutions that can deliver meaningful carbon savings not just by 2050, but within the decade.
鈥淪ustainable aviation fuels will play a critical role in achieving the Government鈥檚 goal of demonstrating flight across the Atlantic without harming the environment within a generation. In fact, our planned waste-to-jet-fuel facility in Lincolnshire could be fuelling transatlantic flights in just five years鈥 time without the need to modify aircraft or engines at all.

鈥淰elocys has the technology, already demonstrated at commercial scale, which cuts lifecycle carbon emissions by 70 per cent. By incorporating carbon capture and storage technology emissions could be cut further, enabling the facility and others that could follow to produce carbon negative emissions fuel by the end of the decade.鈥
Altalto will be 鈥榩lug-in鈥 ready for carbon capture proposals for the Humber region, which are also included in a green recovery fund announced today.
Speaking ahead of the meeting, Mr Shapps said: "Climate change is one of the greatest challenges we face today, and tackling it will require action from everybody. This is why we鈥檙e bringing together Government, businesses and investors in a ground-breaking new partnership.
"The Jet Zero Council is a huge step forward in making change 鈥 as we push forward with innovative technologies such as sustainable fuels and eventually fully electric planes, we will achieve guilt-free flying and boost sustainability for years to come."
A cross-party group of MPs have already called for significant funding to accelerate the availability of such fuels, with BA chief executive Alex Cruz joining Velocys in championing it.
