Inward investing rare earth specialist Pensana - in partnership with the University of Hull and others - has secured a 拢316,643 grant from Innovate 海角视频.

The company, developing a refining complex at Saltend, has tapped into the organisation鈥檚 Climates programme. Working with electric car manufacturer Polestar and tech specialist Route2, as well as academics from Leeds, a low carbon sustainable supply chain for magnets will be developed.

It will use Pensana and Polestar鈥檚 environmental, social and governance principles within engineering to review and measure impacts and identify opportunities to further reduce carbon in products seen as vital for the energy transition. Both teamed up last year to deliver the 'world's first truly climate neutral car'.

Business Minister Nusrat Ghani said: 鈥淩are earth elements underpin so much of what makes everyday life and work possible, from the cars we drive to the phones we use. It is essential that, in a rapidly changing world, we do all we can to ensure resilient supplies of these and other critical minerals. We are laser-focused on securing robust supply chains, for the growing, green industries that will deliver jobs and prosperity across the 海角视频 in the decades to come.鈥

Pensana aims to import mined minerals from operations in Africa, via the Humber, to use chemically engineered separation techniques to kickstart supply for the likes of electric vehicle batteries and offshore wind turbine generators.

Danny McNeice, Pensana鈥檚 sustainability manager said: 鈥淲e believe Polestar 0 will set the standard for the electric vehicle industry, while Route2 has developed market-leading socio-economic impact measurement software and we are delighted to work with them and our academic partners at Leeds and Hull universities to establish a 海角视频-centric sustainable rare-earth supply chain from 鈥榤ine to magnets鈥.鈥

The Climates programme is a 拢15 million fund set up to develop critical mineral supply chains within the 海角视频. Strand One was launched in February with a focus on stimulating research on rare earths across the 海角视频. Pensana has already developed a strong approach to sustainability through the publishing of its Blueprint for Sustainable Rare Earths and has, through market-leading low-carbon design and renewable power agreements at both its 海角视频 and Angolan projects, placed itself well on the way to achieving its strategic goal to be a leading low-embedded carbon supplier of rare earth products on the market.
