First Bombardier built Greater Anglia train begins testing

Derby train-maker is supplying a total of 111 electric trains

The first of a brand new fleet of trains being built by Derby’s Bombardier for a major º£½ÇÊÓƵ operator have started testing.

The firm is currently building 111 electric trains at its Litchurch Lane factory for Greater Anglia.

Eventually, they will replace all of the operator’s existing electric trains on all its services, with the exception of the Norwich-London intercity service.

Now, the first of the new trains is being put through its paces after being taken for a test run on the Southend Victoria line.

All of the trains will undergo a series of performance and safety tests before they can come into passenger service.

Tests include checking they interact properly with the network, such as points and signals, testing performance at different speeds and checking in at every station and platform to see if any signs or platform furniture needs to be relocated.

Greater Anglia staff, including drivers and station staff, also need to be trained to work with the new trains.

Once introduced, the new fleet will provide thousands of extra seats for commuters on their journeys to London as they will be longer than those currently operating.
