JCB has laid off almost 150 workers from its Staffordshire factories

Digger maker JCB has laid off almost 150 agency workers in the last three weeks.

The Staffordshire business, which employs more than 7,200 people at its 11 plants in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ, laid off 90 agency workers at the end of July - on the day of the annual summer shutdown.

And yesterday - which was the first day back in work after the summer break for most JCB staff - a further 40 agency workers were told they were no longer needed by the company.

JCB has declined to comment on yesterday's decision but blamed last month's job losses on 'uncertainties in the global market.'

In a statement released to on July 23, a JCB spokesman: "Due to some uncertainties in the global economy with demand softening in certain parts of the world, JCB has today released 90 agency employees as we align machine build rates with anticipated demand."

Workers have now hit out at JCB's decision to cut its temporary workforce.

One agency worker, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "JCB told loads of employees to get your belongings, you're being laid off. With no prior warning, we were instantly escorted off site.

"Some of us were made to sit in the canteen for seven hours before being told we were being laid off. It's a sad day for us ex-employees and our families."
