A new hybrid-powered car being built at Toyota’s Derbyshire factory has helped the firm accelerate past two sales milestones.

At the beginning of the year, the Japanese car manufacturer’s Burnaston plant, near Derby, started producing the all-new Corolla.

The car is the first Toyota model in Europe to be offered with two hybrid power options, including a new 2.0-litre system, built at the firm’s Deeside factory in North Wales.

The popularity of the car - along with other hybrids in the Toyota range - has led to total º£½ÇÊÓƵ sales of hybrid powered models reaching 300,000.

At the same time, total Toyota (GB) hybrid sales, which include Lexus models, have broken through the 400,000 mark.

Toyota sold its first hybrid car - powered by a combination of electricity and petrol - almost 20 years ago, when the Toyota Prius went on sale.

Since then, Toyota has been a market leader for hybrids, constantly improving both performance and driver appeal.

Up to the end of May this year, Toyota hybrid sales posted a 13.8% increase on last year, while the figure for Lexus was 11.7%.
