A Derbyshire aerospace engineering firm is to almost halve its workforce following a slump in orders caused by the impact of the coronavirus crisis.

Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, which manufactures airframe seals and reinforced components at its factory on the Cadley Hill Industrial Estate, in Swadlincote, is cutting jobs after seeing a 40% slump in business.

According to the Unite union, the firm is looking to make 60 roles redundant out of a total workforce of 137.

The company will now enter into a 30-day consultation with the union, which has vowed to fight to minimise the number of job losses as much as possible.

The Covid-19 pandemic has had a major impact on the aviation sector as lockdowns across the world resulted in a fall in demand for air travel.

It has impacted major players, including Rolls-Royce, which has its civil aerospace division in Derby.

The aero engine-maker is looking to cut 9,000 jobs from its global workforce of 52,000. Last week, the firm reported that 3,000 º£½ÇÊÓƵ workers had expressed an interest in voluntary redundancy, of which 2,000 will leave the company next month.

But the effects of the coronavirus crisis are also impacting aerospace supply chain companies like Trelleborg.
