Derby’s Rolls-Royce has landed a deal thought to be worth hundreds of millions of pounds to supply aero engines for a new fleet of aircraft ordered by Virgin Atlantic.

This morning, at the opening day of the Paris Air Show, the engineering giant, which has its civil aerospace division at Sinfin, welcomed the decision by Virgin to order 14 A330neo aircraft from Airbus.

The A330neo is exclusively powered by the Trent 7000 - an engine designed and developed in Derby.

The exact cost of the deal has not been disclosed but it is thought to be worth hundreds of millions of pounds to Rolls-Royce.

The Trent 7000 is the seventh member of the Trent engine family - and incorporates technology from some of Rolls-Royce’s most successful engines.

It draws on more than 50 million flying hours of experience from the Trent 700, which powers the original version of the A330.

It entered service in November, delivering a step change in performance and economics compared to the Trent 700.

Shai Weiss, chief executive of Virgin Atlantic, said: “A fundamental part of our strategy is collaboration with partners and our announcement today with Airbus and Rolls-Royce, following the launch of our A350-1000 this summer, takes our partnership to the next level.
