East Yorkshire-based decorating products producer Bartoline has launched a new over-the-counter trade range as it seeks to maximise its Ƶ manufacturing advantage.

The 1876 The Professional Range plays on the Beverley firm’s heritage, referencing the founding date, while underlining the product development expertise and production capability that has gone into creating the reformulated lines.

It is described as a comprehensive suite of professional quality decorating supplies with an initial 32 products across white spirits, powder fillers, ready-mix filler, plaster skim, wallpaper adhesives, caulk, adhesives and sanitary and frame sealants.

Managing director Paul Robbins said, “Bartoline’s target market for the new range is professional decorators and over-the-counter trade sales. For the builders’ merchant, the 1876 The Professional Range establishes Bartoline as a single source for a comprehensive range of decorating supplies with all the efficiencies that provides. It’s an exciting move to build on Bartoline’s strengths.”

Developed and manufactured across two plants in the town - one of which has the largest production capacity for liquid filling in Europe - Bartoline can provide merchants with reassuring certainty of supply, Mr Robbins said.

“At a time when international shipments are subject to unprecedented pressures, being based in the Ƶ has enabled Bartoline to achieve a track record of meeting over 97 per cent of customer retail orders on time and in full over the last 12 months. “We shall provide that same high-quality service to our trade customers.”

He believes the comprehensiveness and quality of the 1876 range, along with Bartoline’s “competitive pricing and short supply chain ability to meet short lead times”, will make the trade range a welcome new addition to the market.

The £25 million turnover business, bought out by an investment fund managed by Endless LLP last year after almost 150 years in family ownership, is investing in branding and a marketing campaign for launch, having seen strong growth through the pandemic as home improvement became a focus.

Rebecca Airey has also been appointed as trade account director to lead Bartoline’s trade team of regional sales managers who will liaise with merchants’ buyers throughout the Ƶ.

Mr Robbins, who was appointed in March 2021 as the acquisiton completed - allowing the last in the family line in the business, Simon Barton, to retire - arrived from a paints and coatings background, having previously been managing director for Akzo Nobel in northern Europe. He said there are advanced plans to add additional products to the core trade range over the next 18 months.
