Coronavirus prompts JCB to reduce º£½ÇÊÓƵ production

Company says it is anticipating component shortages from Chinese suppliers impacted by the virus outbreak

JCB is reducing production at its º£½ÇÊÓƵ factories

Industrial engineering group JCB is planning to reduce production at its º£½ÇÊÓƵ factories as a result of the coronavirus.

The Staffordshire-based manufacturer said the move was due to anticipated component shortages from Chinese suppliers impacted by the virus outbreak.

It will mean a shorter working week for around 4,000 JCB and agency shop floor employees from next Monday and an immediate suspension of all overtime.

The measures have been discussed with trade union GMB and will see the introduction of a 34-hour week for º£½ÇÊÓƵ production employees until further notice.

JCB employees would be paid for a 39-hour week and would bank the hours, working them back later in the year, the company said in a statement.

The company is headquartered in Rocester, east Staffordshire. Its other affected plants are in Rugeley, Cheadle and Uttoxeter in Staffordshire, Foston in Derbyshire and Wrexham in North Wales.

Chief operating officer Mark Turner said: "The disruption to the component supply chain in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ comes at a time when demand for JCB products is very strong so, while this course of action is very unfortunate, it is absolutely necessary to protect the business and our skill base.
