British Steel is recruiting the next generation of steelmakers, with 24 positions opened up at its Scunthorpe headquarters.

Successful applicants will enrol on three-year training programmes for mechanical and electrical roles.

The positions, released in National Apprenticeship Week, are in addition to 31 manufacturing trainees who have joined the business since December.

Chief executive Ron Deelen said: “We’re delighted to be recruiting our first apprentices since the new business was launched and there could not be a better time to be joining us with the significant investments and improvements we’re making.

“Many of our employees joined as apprentices, including senior managers and leaders, and have built fantastic careers within the steel industry. Opportunities like these do not come along very often so we’re looking forward to welcoming the next generation of steelworkers into the business.”

Training will be delivered in partnership with North Lindsey College. The first part of the programme will be spent at the in-house Apprentice Training Centre in Scunthorpe, where the new recruits will be prepared for going out into plant areas. The remainder of the apprenticeship is spent plant-based, working in steelmaking, ironmaking, energy and infrastructure or in one of British Steel’s mills, alongside further study in the apprentice centre.

A "progressive salary and benefits package" is highlighted.

Jill Cooper, executive director for employer engagement and projects at North Lindsey College, said: “These are incredible opportunities to join a major local business and receive first class training.
