The McBraida factory opened in 1959 and employs 180 staff.

Ward councillor, Samuel Bromley said: "While not against the principle of an expansion, there are a number of concerns within the proposals which go beyond what should be reasonable for a site in this location and if granted, would have a considerably negative impact on the neighbouring residents' ability to enjoy their property.

"I feel the increased height of the factory would infringe on the neighbouring properties and severely impact reduce the light received by the properties neighbouring the wall. It would also prove overbearing for the neighbouring properties and impact on sightlines from the homes."
