Derby train-maker Bombardier has said it has implemented a ‘comprehensive’ plan to help it to continue production despite the coronavirus outbreak.

This week, Toyota, which has its º£½ÇÊÓƵ car manufacturing plant at Burnaston, near Derby, announced that is was suspending production at factories across Europe, including the º£½ÇÊÓƵ, due to the impact on projected sales and its supply chain.

However, Bombardier, which is another of the region’s major manufacturers, has said it is managing to continue with production at its Litchurch Lane factory.

It has implemented what it describes as a “comprehensive” plan to protect the health of its staff at the factory and its maintenance depots at Etches Park in Derby and Central Rivers, near Burton.

This year, the firm is aiming to build and deliver a record number of trains for key customers such as Greater Anglia, South Western Railway and West Midlands Trains.

The firm has been recruiting hundreds of extra staff to help it fulfil these orders.

Bombardier, which employs around 2,000 people at the Derby site, said it was doing all it could to ensure production continues, while protecting the well-being of workers.

In a statement, the firm said: “Bombardier’s priority is to protect our employees from COVID-19, while mitigating the effects on the production and maintenance of rolling stock.
