A manufacturing plant near Bristol that was closed following an outbreak of Covid-19 at the weekend has confirmed more employees have tested positive for the virus.

Construction giant Balfour Beatty said on Monday (July 27) that 19 of its 90 staff at the site had contracted coronavirus - and the facility would be shut "until further notice".

In an update today (Tuesday, July 28), the company confirmed that 28 employees at the plant, which is making nuclear-grade segments for Hinkley Point C power plant in Somerset, have now tested positive.

Balfour said it was using the NHS track and trace app and it had "so far shown no impact" on the Hinkley Point C main construction site.

The company also said it had also carried out a “deep clean” of the facility at the weekend and was engaging with Public Health England and Bristol City Council over the outbreak.

Balfour Beatty said in a statement: "We can confirm that 28 employees working at our manufacturing facility in Avonmouth, Bristol, have tested positive for Covid-19 as of Tuesday, July 28.

"In response, we undertook a deep clean of the facility over the weekend and initiated the NHS’ Test and Trace procedure.

"Having engaged with Public Health England and Bristol City Council we have now taken the responsible decision to close the facility until further notice to reduce the potential further spread of Covid-19."
