BAE Systems 3D prints face masks

Defence, security and aerospace giant BAE Systems is 3D printing tens of thousands of face masks for hospitals across the º£½ÇÊÓƵ during the Covid-19 outbreak.

The º£½ÇÊÓƵ’s largest manufacturing employer has so far provided more than 26,000 masks, which are made of a plastic headband and long clear visor, to cities including Bristol, Manchester, London, Preston, Portsmouth and Southampton.

Another 40,000 are expected to be delivered this week, the company said.

BAE, which using its industrial-scale 3D printers to make the face shields for the NHS, started producing the masks after being contacted by a GP.

Andy Schofield, manufacturing technology director, said: “We looked at a few options and modified an existing design to suit the requirements of the GP.”

The company then developed its design and said it was now delivering supplies to frontline health workers every day while the need for protection continues.

BAE is also using its supply chain to help with the manufacture of tens of thousands more face shields.

Richard Hamilton, manufacturing and support director at BAE Systems, said: “We’ve had an amazing response to our recent announcement that we’re donating PPE to the NHS. This has been a real team effort at a difficult time for everyone."
