Military jet developer Aeralis is set to partner with defence giant Babcock to explore 'flexible' aircraft designs for air forces.

The manufacturer, which has a base at Bristol’s Aztec West Business Park, is currently developing a modular aircraft design for the Royal Air Force (RAF) and hopes to deliver the first fully British-crewed military jet since the 1970s.

The company has now signed a memorandum of understanding with the French wing of Babcock, which is currently under contract with the country's ministry of defence to deliver aircraft and simulation training assets for jet pilots and weapons systems officers. Babcock is also a lead partner in a flight training programme for pilots and aircrew to the three services of the º£½ÇÊÓƵ armed forces.

It comes after Aeralis unveiled “revolutionary” designs for a new modular light jet aircraft at the Defence and Security Equipment International event in London, which could allow for multiple configurations.

Aeralis and Babcock said they would work together on a number of “current and future operational requirements”, including using Babcock’s existing expertise in both the º£½ÇÊÓƵ and France.

Aeralis founder and chief executive Tristan Crawford said: “Aeralis is delighted to have signed this memorandum of understanding with Babcock to explore a highly innovative aircraft service offering in the light fast jet aviation sector. Babcock is set to become an important partner as part of developing Aeralis’ exciting service offering across multiple opportunities in the defence aviation market.”

Babcock France’s chief executive Pierre Basquin added: “Innovation is key for Babcock, due to the nature of the critical and challenging operations we are delivering to our customers. Working with Aeralis, an agile partner with a strong vision for “out of the box” solutions, will help us to find the best platform for the future military flight training opportunities we have in aviation”.
