Airbus is lobbying the º£½ÇÊÓƵ government to support Virgin Atlantic with financial aid amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Virgin Atlantic is reportedly due to ask the º£½ÇÊÓƵ Government for a package of commercial loans and guarantees worth hundreds of millions of pounds.

It comes as the whole aviation sector is reeling from the impact of Covid-19, with most routes suspended.

Richard Branson, the billionaire founder of the carrier, has already offered to inject $250m into the Virgin Group with a large portion due to go to the airline.

Now Airbus - which employs more than 9,000 workers at Broughton, North Wales, and Filton, near Bristol - and others in the aviation sector like Rolls Royce and Heathrow are reportedly urging the Government to save the airline.

In a letter seen by broadcaster Sky, Airbus’ º£½ÇÊÓƵ chairman John Harrison warned that Virgin Atlantic’s “collapse could have an extremely negative impact on the A330 programme”.

“As you will be aware, all wings for these aircraft are designed and manufactured in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ, and orders from airlines like Virgin are vital for the continuation of our business”, he added.

The wings for the A330 are made at Broughton in North Wales.
