Aerospace giant Airbus to furlough more than 3,000 workers

The European planemaker has confirmed 3,200 workers will go on the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme

Aerospace giant Airbus will furlough more than half of its workforce at Broughton as production is cut at the site.

The European planemaker has confirmed 3,200 workers will go on the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme - where the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ Government pays 80% of the wages of furloughed staff.

This move is in addition to the 500 Broughton workers who were furloughed by contractor Guidant earlier this month.

The plant employed just over 6,000 workers prior to the coronavirus crisis.

The announcement does not impact the Filton site near Bristol.

The news comes after Airbus chief executive Guillaume Faury warned the company is "bleeding cash" due to the pandemic.

This month Business Live of the A320 from 60 to 40 while also reducing A350 rates to 6.

“We’re bleeding cash at an unprecedented speed, which may threaten the very existence of our company,” Mr Faury said in the memo to workers.
