Aerospace firm to cut more than 100 jobs at County Durham site

An aerospace firm is consulting on redundancies at a third site, with more than 100 jobs set to go at a plant in County Durham.

Gardner Aerospace has opened consultation with its workforce at its site in Consett, with 110 jobs out of the 205 staff earmarked for redundancy.

The proposed cuts at Consett follow job losses by Gardner at its factories in Hull and Derby.

Jobs are at risk following a major slump in the aerospace sector in the coronavirus lockdown. Gardner manufacturers components for companies such as Airbus, Rolls-Royce and GKN Aerospace, but the aerospace sector has been one of the hardest hit by the pandemic after thousands of flights were cancelled around the world.

Unions said they were hoping to reduce the number of job losses at the Consett site, and were also opposing proposals that those who escaped the job losses work longer hours.

Michael Hooper, a national officer for the GMB union, said: “The intention of the firm is to reduce the workforce but increase the amount of hours for every else. The stewards at the site have a meeting with the company about that tomorrow.

“Some of the people working there are furloughed so trying to get information to them is difficult.”

The job losses at Gardner are the latest to be announced in the North East in the last few weeks.
