One million pounds is being made available to help companies in the West Country research and test out environmental ideas.

The initiative from the West of England Combined Authority (Weca) is being launched as part of a drive to meet the region’s net-zero targets.

Cash grants of between £20,000 and £75,000 will be handed out to businesses in Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire, which are developing innovative ways to cut carbon.

Metro mayor Dan Norris said: “As part of our drive to meet the region’s ambitious net-zero targets, I’m proud to announce £1m of green innovation grants."

Mr Norris will visit Clean Energy Prospector, a green project which previously received a grant of £50,000 under a forerunner scheme, on Wednesday (January 19) to mark the launch of the fund.

According to Clean Energy Prospector’s managing director Damon Rand, the project built a self-sufficient energy system linking together solar panels, heat pumps, battery storage and electric vehicle charging points across the community.

The organisation used all the data gathered to make the most of the clean energy generated - and is now planning to pave the way to “bigger and better” energy efficient housing schemes.
