"Very welcome news” as Government announces £1.57bn support for Britain's museums, galleries and theatres

Independent cinemas, heritage sites and music venues are also eligible for the emergency grants and loans

The Government last night announced a £1.57 billion support package to "protect" the future of Britain's museums, galleries and theatres.

Independent cinemas, heritage sites and music venues are also eligible for the emergency grants and loans.

After weeks of concern over the viability of the Ƶ arts and creative sector, the Government said: "Repayable finance (for the loans) will be issued on generous terms tailored for cultural institutions to ensure they are affordable."

Arts Council England, the Royal Opera House, the Society of London Theatre & Ƶ Theatre, and the Music Venue Trust were among those to welcome the funding.

However, it has come too late for venues such as the Haymarket in Leicester, Nuffield Southampton and Southport theatres, which have either gone into administration or become insolvent.

Others have warned mandatory social distancing will make it virtually impossible for most theatres to profitably reopen.

Guidance for a phased return of the performing arts sectors is expected to be published by the Government shortly.

Museums had said they faced an uncertain future, while 1,500 artists and acts signed a letter to Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden calling for a road map for the live music industry.
