An engineering and technology firm that brought together three highly-rated North East companies has consolidated its activities onto one main site.

Turntide Technologies was formed in 2021 when it acquired BorgWarner Gateshead, formerly known as Sevcon, Sunderland’s Hyperdrive Innovation and Cramlington business Avid Technology.

The company has now integrated its three North East sites to create a consolidated engineering campus in Gateshead, supported by additional engineering and storage capacity at its Sunderland and Cramlington sites. It has also welcomed North East mayor Kim McGuinness to open its new energy storage and battery technology production area at its Gateshead site.

Turntide designs and manufactures electric motors, power electronics, energy storage, and thermal management systems, serving a range of transport industries. It was recently announced as the preferred supplier to Hitachi Rail in County Durham for its battery train programme that has won two significant recent orders.

Turntide hopes the technology designed and manufactured in Gateshead will drive global efforts to decarbonize transport systems. Its technology is already being deployed in sectors such as construction and agricultural machinery, materials handling, and urban passenger transport, positioning the company and the North East at the forefront of global electrification efforts.

Steve Hornyak, CEO of Turntide Technologies, said: “We are honoured to welcome the mayor to officially commission this important and expanded production facility. This campus forms the core of Turntide’s global electrification operations and reinforces our commitment to supporting the decarbonization of anything that moves.

“North East England has an extraordinary legacy of innovation in electrification, and we are proud to be part of that continuing story. The region offers world-class engineering talent, a highly skilled workforce, and a dynamic combined authority and mayor, which are creating an environment where businesses like Turntide can thrive, grow and serve global markets. We are excited about the opportunities in this region, and we are fully committed to playing our part in its future success.”

Ms McGuinness said: “The North East will be the home of the green energy revolution, and our work with companies like Turntide Technologies, who are expanding their factory, shows we are making that happen right here and now.
