The nation may be suffering from ongoing political and economic uncertainty but it has been another mostly positive year for business in Gloucestershire, with companies jostling for a spot in the Top 100 list.
The turnover required to be featured in this year’s Top 100 is 17 per cent higher than in 2018 - up from £22.9m to £26.8m.
The top spot is perhaps not a surprise.
Wealth management group St James’s Place, based in Cirencester, has seen funds under its management grow to more than £100bn.
It has again demonstrated how financial companies can operate outside the City of London bubble.
Gloucestershire has a long history of innovation and companies like Spirax-Sarco Engineering, Safran Landing Systems and Renishaw are prime examples of how the county is a manufacturing and engineering powerhouse.

Cheltenham-based Spirax-Sarco became a constituent of the FTSE 100 for its steam and thermal energy solutions.

How the Gloucestershire list was compiled
As part of the criteria for making it into the Top 100 list, companies must be able to demonstrate a positive contribution to the county and a significant amount of their operations must be conducted in Gloucestershire - meaning there are some omissions on this year’s list.
Cheltenham & Gloucester building society has been fully subsumed by Lloyds Banking Group despite still being a company in theory, with registered offices in the county.
Despite being featured on last year’s list, with a central region figure, Kier Construction were excluded this year on the basis that its turnover figure of £2.2bn was company wide. Kier Construction said it does not disclose regional turnover data.
Horizon Nuclear Power Services Limited also left the list following the collapse of an international nuclear deal and suspension of its 海角视频 nuclear development programme - the knock-on effect impacting employees in Gloucester.
Companies have been omitted because their headquarters are not in the county, or the majority of their operations are carried out elsewhere - resulting in their omission - including Passionate about People, Zurich, Bridgend Custodial Services and Hulton Group Holding.
Heritage Automotive (formerly Blade Motor Group) was included given in their case the number of dealerships active in the county despite their headquarters relocating to Salisbury.

More force needed to break glass ceiling
As the second annual set of gender pay gap reports demonstrates, women in the county’s biggest businesses are still generally paid less than men.
But it is encouraging to see several of the county’s leading businesses in the vanguard of pay equality, bucking the nationwide trend by paying their female employees slightly more than their male employees.
The 海角视频-wide figures for the latest reporting year are a mixed bag, but on the whole, show no significant improvement to the gender pay gap from last year.
According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development’s (CIPD) labour market economist, Jon Boys, the 海角视频’s headline ‘median’ gender pay gap figure has worsened slightly, increasing by 0.4 per cent to 9.6 per cent.
But the ‘mean’ gender pay gap figure has improved from 13.4 per cent down to 13.1 per cent.
And the percentage of organisations in which women are paid less than men has also increased by 0.69 per cent to 77.79 per cent.
Unfortunately, on the whole, the gender pay gap is not getting any smaller, and with nearly 80 per cent of businesses paying men more than women (on average), the labour market still has a long way to go in addressing this disparity.
As the latest figures suggest, these changes will not happen overnight.
Employers must play their part in making pay as fair as it can be, but it’s worth remembering that these figures don’t automatically mean that women receive unequal pay for equal work.
The reporting does not directly compare male and female pay in equivalent roles; instead it examines the rates of pay generally across the business.
With this in mind, in many instances, there may well be genuine reasons behind the gap, for example your business may be in a male dominated industry or may have a large number of lower-paid jobs traditionally undertaken by women.
For employers, an analysis of your workforce and its gender pay gap (even if you’re not required to publish the data) is a good place to start. This will also alert you to which areas of the business are at risk of a potential claim or grievance. You can then consider which measures can be taken to help reduce pay gaps in the future.
When you’re communicating with your employees, transparency is the order of the day, regardless of the size or existence of a gender pay gap. Even if measures to address the gap need to be implemented over a long period of time, talk to your staff at the outset so they know that you are taking action. A genuine, well-thought-out action plan, communicated honestly, is a good strategy to get affected employees on board.
It can also reduce the risk of potential claims, and unwanted bad PR.
